BMMK (Børns Møde Med Kunsten) is an initiative for all Northern Danish municipalities, where daycare centers, schools and cultural institutions can obtain guidance and funding for professional encounters with artists of all types. The institution pays 40% of the price of employing an artist with the other 60% funded by BMMK. The sister institution is called UMMK (Unges Møde Med Kunsten) and is focused on youths from 14-26 year olds. Courses are typically between 10 to 40 hours long, with a minimum of 10 hours. The institution forms an important link between artists and institutions. It provides a secure financial framework for artists venturing out into teaching while allowing them flexibility in their schedules. The part-payment framework also allows schools to employ qualified artists at a reduced rate. Courses are designed to be of a long durational character, allowing time for absorption and concentration. UMMK also has applications open for grants of kr. 10.000,00 for young cultural practitioners for starter projects. Learning how to apply for and administer funding applications is a vital skill for young cultural practitioners.
